  • The economic effect of avian influenza on poultry production in south west Nigeria  By : o.mercy
This study examines the effect of avian influenza outbreak on poultry production in southwest Nigeria using Oyo and Ogun states as case studies. Descriptive statistics and econometrics (discontinuous regression) analysis were employed as the tools for analysis, which revealed that the average age of the respondents is between 40- 49 years and majorities are males. About 84 percent of the respondents are married with an average family size of six. Majorities have tertiary education while very few finished at primary level. The regression analysis revealed that price of eggs, labour, amount spent on drugs, veterinary attention, quantity of water, quantity of feed are the key determinants of the outputs gotten from poultry production. The regression analysis indicated above involved the use of chow test, which helps to know if the structure of the output changes with or without bird flu and the research indicated that with the use of chow test, there was a great significant difference between the outputs of poultry products before as against after the spread of the virus. Gross margin analysis was also used to test for the profitability of the poultry farmers before and after the outbreak. It was discovered that the poultry farmers in the study areas experienced a heavy loss after the outbreak than what they had before the outbreak. This paper therefore presents a theoretical and an empirical study of avian flu epidemic in southwest Nigeria. A rapid assessment of the effects of this outbreak was conducted by a structured interview schedule. Thirty-one affected poultry farmers were randomly selected form Oyo and Ogun states for the interview. Since avian influenza is highly contagious and easily spread, the most common method of control is culling of infected flocks. This is followed by disinfection and the farm is certified free of the virus.
