Free to air television

Free to air television is broadcasted through satellites and is generally received via any sort of suitable Free to Air (FTA) Receivers. Latest versions of these FTA receivers are designed to receive digital television which is basically MPEG-2/DVB-S and HDTV whereas other older FTA receivers relied on analog satellite signals which is going obsolete day by day. Even though FTA is called free, but the viewer does actually pay for the channels. FTA is sometimes delivered by satellite television, but in various parts of the world free-to-air television channels are broadcast unencrypted on UHF or VHF bands In the United States of America, there are various popular brands of FTA receivers which are compliant with the latest technologies in broadcast; some of these are Sonicview, Pansat, Viewsat and Nfusion.

FTA is extremely popular because it uses the same technology which is used by various other television broadcast networks across the United States. Those networks are mostly pay channels and included premium movies and pay-per-view shows. Most of the time hackers are able to crack the decoded signal of those pay channels offered by those stations and add necessary coding and have unauthorized reception of the pay channels. But manufacturers of FTA receivers do not encourage this sort of practice and installation of third party software on the FTA receivers voids all warranties and they take great care not to sell the receivers to individuals who are prone to such activities. FTA receivers are involved in piracy more often because it does not use the traditional method of encrypted smart cards which you can alter and use it to hack various channels, it requires an update to the receiver’s firmware. Countermeasures which disable access to the cards have no effect on the FTA receivers because they are incapable of being updated remotely via satellite as provider-issued receivers are. The service provider will change the process and the algorithm in which new encryption information is sent. And after a short while third party coders will release thousands of altered versions of the code all over the internet for the FTA receivers. Although, some countermeasures failed to work some of them have been known to be secure for several weeks.

Most of these FTA receivers provide the highest quality video and audio reception and Sonicview, Pansat, Viewsat and Nfusion are some of the leading brand of satellite receivers. It took very large dish antennas to get a few dozen channels prior to the MPEG-2/DVB generation and it was impossible to receive lots of channels. And before digital video broadcast started, analogue equipment was also very expensive. But now a lot of people can afford these FTA receivers and Sonicview, Pansat, Viewsat and Nfusion made it possible for middle-class families to view quality television. In the Asia Pacific region FTA was used on a large scale and this allowed great reductions in per-channel transmission costs. And as a mass consumer region Asia did not have a lot of money to spend on analog equipments so FTA was a bigger hit.
