Frozen Peas for Cold Therapy

Cold therapy has been around for thousands of years.
Recently, people have found that frozen peas provide a source of cold to treat sprains, bruises and various traumas to the body that respond well to cold therapy.
Cold therapy may be used to prevent or reduce the pain and swelling that accompanies musculoskeletal injuries. A cold compress acts as a vasoconstrictor, effectively decreasing tissue metabolism, inflammatory response,pain and muscle spasms in the area of the body to which it is applied. A cold compress may also be used to prevent heat exhaustion or for generally cooling of the body.
Cold may be applied to the body in a number of different ways. Body parts may be immersed in cold water but it is difficult to apply cold to specific areas of the body without immersing other body parts unnecessarily. Ice and ice bags may be applied directly to the body but there is very little contour to the body and the cold tends not to penetrate deeply or last very long. These may also be too cold for prolonged skin contact and can cause discomfort and pain to the area.
It is common practice to apply a frozen pack of vegetables, usually a bag of frozen peas, to an injured part of the body to relieve pain and swelling. Frozen peas have the advantage of molding to the shape of the body part that is being treated. Although they are effective, the use of peas is limited because they can not be frozen repeatedly, become soggy, and often leak after prolonged use. Devices that have been developed to address these disadvantages in the past but have not been completely successful.
